Pico Alto is the highest point on Santa Maria, with 590 metres altitude, and the most comprehensive viewpoint of the entire island. From its summit, on clear visibility days โ€” frequent in summer โ€”, it is possible to see the entirety of Santa Maria in a single panorama: from the reddish cliffs of the north coast to the extensions of golden sand on the south coast, passing through the agricultural fields and pine groves that fill the interior. Under exceptional conditions, the island of Sรฃo Miguel appears on the northeast horizon, about 80 kilometres away, reminding of the isolated yet strategic position of Santa Maria in the Atlantic.

Pico Alto is also a zone of special interest for observing migratory birds, as Santa Maria lies on an Atlantic migration route that brings rare and accidental species during spring and autumn. Birdwatchers from all over Europe visit the island especially between September and November to record North American species blown off course by wind. The Pico Alto zone is integrated into a Natural Reserve area, with altitude vegetation that includes endemic Azores species. Access is via paved road almost to the summit, with a short final hiking section. To explore the island at sea level, complement with a visit to Praia Formosa.

The sunrise visit, when the island awakens covered in mist and the first rays of sun paint the horizon, is an unforgettable experience. We recommend jackets even in full summer, as wind at the summit can be intense.
