Azorean Cuisine Guide: Flavors You Can't Miss

Azorean gastronomy is one of the great surprises for those visiting the archipelago. With fresh products from sea and land, centuries of historical influence, and unique cooking methods, Azorean cuisine is an unforgettable experience.

Cozido das Furnas

The Azores' most emblematic dish is cooked by the earth itself. In São Miguel, in the village of Furnas, pots filled with meats, sausages, and vegetables are buried next to volcanic fumaroles and slow-cooked for 6 hours with the natural heat of the earth. The result is an unmatched flavor.

São Jorge Cheese

Produced on São Jorge island for over 500 years, this DOP cured cheese is one of Portugal's finest. With an intense, slightly spicy flavor, it pairs perfectly with local wine.

Alcatra from Terceira

A traditional beef stew slow-cooked in a clay pot, seasoned with local pepper, wine, and spices. Every Terceira family has their own secret recipe.

Grilled Limpets

Simple and delicious: fresh limpets grilled with garlic butter and lemon. Found in virtually every coastal restaurant.

Azorean Pineapple

Pineapple grown in greenhouses in São Miguel is considered one of the best in the world. Smaller and sweeter than tropical pineapple, it has been artisanally produced since the 19th century.

Gorreana Tea

Europe's only tea plantation is in São Miguel. The Gorreana Tea Factory has produced green and black tea since 1883, and the plantation visit is free.
