São Miguel is the largest and most diverse island in the Azores. This 5-day itinerary lets you discover the best of the island at a relaxed pace.
Day 1: Ponta Delgada and South Coast
Start in the Azorean capital. Stroll through the City Gates, visit Graça Market to taste queijadas and fresh pineapple, and end the day at Ponta da Ferraria natural pools at sunset.
Day 2: Sete Cidades
Dedicate the entire day to Sete Cidades. Start at the Vista do Rei viewpoint, descend to the village, lunch by the lagoon, and explore the surrounding viewpoints. If you have energy, hike the trail around both lagoons.
Day 3: Furnas and East Coast
Morning at Terra Nostra Park — the botanical gardens and thermal pool are a must. Lunch on the famous Cozido das Furnas cooked in the earth. Afternoon visiting Furnas Lagoon and the caldeiras.
Day 4: Lagoa do Fogo and Ribeira Grande
Morning hike to Lagoa do Fogo. Afternoon on the north coast: visit Gorreana Tea Factory, the dark sand beaches of Ribeira Grande, and end with a swim at Santa Bárbara Beach.
Day 5: Nordeste
The Nordeste is the wildest and least visited part of São Miguel. Visit the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park, spectacular viewpoints, and remote villages. The perfect day to wander without a plan.
