The 10 Best Azores Hiking Trails for 2026

The Azores are a true paradise for hikers. With dramatic volcanic landscapes, crystal-clear lagoons, and laurel forests, each trail offers a unique experience.

1. Sete Cidades - Vista do Rei

The most iconic trail in the Azores. The hike starts at the Vista do Rei viewpoint and descends to the shores of the lagoon, passing through breathtaking landscapes. The blue and green lagoon, surrounded by hydrangea-covered slopes, is one of Portugal's most recognizable images.

2. Lagoa do Fogo

Classified as a Nature Reserve, Lagoa do Fogo is reached by a moderate trail through endemic vegetation. At the top, the panoramic view over the mountain-ringed lagoon is absolutely stunning.

3. Fajãs of São Jorge

São Jorge is the hiking island par excellence. The descents to the fajãs — coastal platforms formed by landslides — are unforgettable adventures. The Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, with its interior lagoon, is a must-see.

4. Caldeira do Faial

A circular route around the enormous Faial caldera, with views to Pico in the distance. The lush vegetation and impressive scale of the caldera make this trail memorable.

5. Climbing Pico

The ultimate Azores challenge: climbing Portugal's highest point (2,351m). The ascent is demanding but rewarding — on clear days, you can see several islands of the archipelago from the summit.

Practical Tips

Always bring waterproof clothing, even on sunny days. Weather in the Azores changes rapidly. Wear hiking boots with good grip and carry enough water. Many trails are marked by the Azores Trails network.
