Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Algar do Carvรฃo is an impressive lava tube located in the interior of the island of Terceira, in the Azores, considered one of the best preserved in the world and open to the public. About 90 metres deep, the cavity houses a crystal-clear underground lake, quartz stalactites and walls covered with rare geological formations dating back more than two thousand years.
The visit is conducted by a guided route with stairs and safe walkways, covering approximately 300 metres underground. The temperature inside is around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, so it is recommended to bring a jacket even in the height of summer. Non-slip footwear is also advised, as the floor can be damp.
Algar do Carvรฃo is open between May and October, with variable hours depending on the season. The entrance has a reduced cost and access is limited to small groups to preserve the interior ecosystem. It is located near the Gruta do Natal, making it possible to combine both visits on the same afternoon. A unique experience for those who appreciate adventure and volcanic geology in the Azores.
