Fort of Sรฃo Joรฃo Baptista is an imposing historic fortress located on the tip of Monte Brasil, at the entrance to the bay of Angra do Heroรญsmo, on the island of Terceira. Built over the 16th and 17th centuries, it is considered the largest and best-preserved set of Portuguese defensive structures in the Atlantic, being an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage that distinguishes the Historic Centre of Angra do Heroรญsmo.

The fortress was built to protect the port of Angra, then one of the most important in the world on Atlantic routes. The complex includes bastions, walls, magazines, barracks and a chapel, distributed over a large area that still houses active military facilities. Public access is permitted to certain areas, with guided visits available that reveal centuries of Portuguese military and maritime history.

Fort of Sรฃo Joรฃo Baptista is also visible from the sea and nearby beaches, giving the bay of Angra an unmistakable historical silhouette. The visit is recommended in the morning period, taking advantage of the light to photograph the walls and the view over the city. Comfortable shoes are recommended for walking on the irregular terrain of the fort. An essential stop for those who appreciate history and military architecture on Terceira.
