Misterios Negros Trail
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
The Trail of Black Mysteries is a hiking route of great landscape and geological value located in the centre of the island of Terceira, in the Azores, crossing one of the most singular volcanic landscapes of the archipelago. The trail travels through the zone of Black Mysteries, an area of solidified lava covered by a dense forest of Japanese cryptomeria, giant ferns and mosses that create an almost magical and primitive atmosphere.
With about 4 kilometres in length and reduced elevation gain, the route is accessible to hikers of different levels of experience. The trail is properly marked and travels protected areas integrated into the Forest Recreation Reserve of Black Mysteries. Along the way there are informational panels about the volcanic geology of the island and the endemic flora of the Azores, making the hike equally educational.
The best time to walk the trail is between April and October, although the landscape is particularly evocative on foggy days, when the forest takes on a mysterious appearance that justifies the name of the place. It is recommended to bring a waterproof jacket, water and appropriate hiking shoes. The trail starts near Algar do Carvรฃo, and you can combine both experiences on a single adventure outing on Terceira.
