Gruta do Natal is a lava tube located in the interior of the island of Terceira, in the Azores, and represents one of the most relevant examples of accessible volcanology to the public in the archipelago. With about 700 metres of extension, it is one of the largest lava caves in the Azores and offers a unique window into the volcanic activity that shaped the island thousands of years ago.
Inside the cave are unique geological formations, including lava stalactites, basalt organs and walls covered with coloured minerals varying between red and gold. The interior temperature remains constant throughout the year, making the visit pleasant in any season. The interior route is partially lit and guided, suitable for visitors of different ages.
Gruta do Natal is located near Algar do Carvรฃo, and it is common to combine both visits for an afternoon dedicated to geological adventure on Terceira. It is recommended to bring warm clothing and sturdy closed shoes. Visits are conducted with small groups to minimise environmental impact. Admission is paid and the site is usually open between spring and autumn.
