Vila do Porto
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Vila do Porto is the capital and only town on Santa Maria, and one of the oldest urban centres in the entire Azores archipelago. Founded in the 15th century by the first Portuguese colonisers, it was the first stopping point in Europe for caravels returning from the New World, which gave it singular historical importance. The historic centre preserves this legacy with baroque churches, manor houses of volcanic stone, cobbled streets and shaded squares that tell centuries of Atlantic history. The Church of Our Lady of Assumption, from the 15th century, is the most emblematic monument and a living testament to primitive Azorean religious architecture.
Beyond its heritage value, Vila do Porto is the service centre of the island, with restaurants, municipal market, museums and all the commerce needed for the visitor. The Santa Maria Museum, located in the heart of the village, presents permanent exhibitions on the geology, archaeology and history of the island that enrich any visit. Activity is especially intense during August, with the celebration of Marรฉ de Agosto, the most famous music festival in the Azores. For dinner after a day of exploration, Mesa d'Oito Restaurant is a local reference for creative cuisine.
Vila do Porto is the natural starting point for exploring the entire island. Santa Maria airport is just 3 kilometres away, and the local bus network allows you to reach major attractions without renting a car.
