Maia Beach
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Praia da Maia is one of the most picturesque and least-crowded beaches on Santa Maria, representing a quieter and wilder alternative to the popular Praia Formosa. Located on the north coast of the island, in a small cove protected by green and steep slopes, this beach of dark sand mixed with pebbles has a rustic and natural charm that attracts travellers seeking authenticity. The village of Maia, which lends it its name, is one of the oldest population nuclei on the island, with traditional stone houses and a rural atmosphere that seems untouched by time.
Access is via a winding road that descends to sea level, ending in a small parking area. The waters are cooler than on the south coast, but crystal-clear and rich in marine life, making it an excellent snorkelling and fish observation point. Sea swell can be more intense on the north coast, so it is recommended to check conditions before swimming. Maia is also a starting point for some trails that travel the coastal escarpment and offer extraordinary views over the Atlantic. For lovers of diving on Santa Maria, the waters near Maia hide remarkable underwater treasures.
The best time to visit is between June and September, when the weather is more stable and waters more inviting. Bring a picnic, as there are no beach support services at Maia.
