Diving on Santa Maria is one of the richest and most diverse underwater experiences in the Azores archipelago, benefiting from the unique conditions that make this island a reference for Atlantic diving. The geographical position of Santa Maria, the southernmost of the Azores, gives it warmer and more transparent waters than the other islands โ€” 20 to 30 metres visibility is common โ€”, and extraordinary marine biodiversity. The seabed varies between rocky walls covered in coral, underwater caves, seagrass meadows and sandy areas where encounters with rays and octopuses are frequent. Water temperature varies between 19ยฐC in winter and 25ยฐC in summer.

There are several PADI and SSI certified diving centres on Santa Maria that offer discovery dives, courses and guided trips for divers of all levels. The most emblematic diving sites include Banco do Ambrรณsio, rich in pelagic life, and the caves of Ponta do Castelo, where it is possible to find species such as grouper, barracuda and, occasionally, reef white-tip sharks. The average price of a dive trip with equipment included is between 50 and 80 euros. For snorkelling enthusiasts, the calm waters of Praia da Maia offer an excellent introduction to local marine life.

The ideal time for diving is May to October, with August and September offering the best visibility and temperature conditions. The proximity of the Red Desert and the island's beaches allows combining terrestrial and underwater adventure on a single visit.
