Monte da Ajuda Viewpoint is the most emblematic observation point on Graciosa, located on a hilltop that rises over the village of Santa Cruz da Graciosa and offers one of the most complete panoramas of the island: the capital at its feet, the port and its boats, the agricultural plains that characterise the softness of Graciosa's landscape and, in the background, the Atlantic Ocean in all its expanse. On clear visibility days, the islands of Sรฃo Jorge and Faial appear on the horizon with clarity.

Monte da Ajuda owes its name to the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda found there, one of the most photographed religious buildings on Graciosa, with its simple white faรงade and silhouette that cuts the Atlantic sky with elegance. Several historic chapels that dot the mountain โ€” heritage of centuries of religious devotion of the local population โ€” give the place a spiritual and heritage dimension that goes beyond mere scenic contemplation. The ensemble is considered one of the most representative of popular Azorean religious architecture.

Access to Monte da Ajuda Viewpoint is on foot from the centre of Santa Cruz, via a climb of about 15 to 20 minutes along well-marked paths, or by car via a paved road that reaches close to the top. Admission is free and the viewpoint is accessible throughout the year. The best light for photography occurs in the late afternoon, when the sun illuminates the village facades and the port. For a complete visit to Graciosa's centre, combine with the Trail Around the Caldera, visible from here on the interior horizon of the island.
