Santa Cruz da Graciosa
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Santa Cruz da Graciosa is the main village and capital of Graciosa, and one of the best-preserved examples of Azorean urban architecture of the central group of the archipelago. Its cobbled streets with Portuguese paving, houses whitewashed with black basaltic stone detailing, the logic of churches and chapels distributed through the urban network โ everything contributes to an atmosphere of serenity and authenticity that distinguishes this village from the more frequently visited ones on other islands. The Parish Church of Santa Cruz, dating from the 16th century, is the most imposing monument of the ensemble, with its bell tower and baroque faรงade dominating the central square.
Beyond the Parish Church, Santa Cruz hosts other points of historical and cultural interest: the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, on Monte da Ajuda, and the Ethnographic Museum of Graciosa, which preserves relevant collections about rural and maritime life on the island over the centuries. The village has a human dimension that invites discovery on foot โ a walk of one or two hours allows you to tour the main monuments, the port, the local market and traditional cafรฉs where daily life unfolds at its own pace.
Santa Cruz is the natural starting point for exploring the entire island, being just minutes drive from major attractions like Furna do Enxofre and Monte da Ajuda Viewpoint. The village has visitor support facilities, including accommodation, restaurants and tourism information services. Admission to public spaces and external monuments is free. The best time to visit is spring and summer, when local activity is greater and the climate more favourable.
