Diving in Graciosa
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Diving around Graciosa is one of the most rewarding underwater adventure experiences in the Azores, benefiting from exceptionally clear waters, remarkable marine life richness and a diversity of habitats that attracts divers of all experience levels. Graciosa is one of the least-visited islands of the archipelago, which translates to less-explored seafloor and virtually untouched biodiversity, with visibilities that can exceed 30 metres on the most favourable days.
The most sought-after diving sites include walls and volcanic caves along the south and west coast of the island, where it is possible to find moray eels, octopuses, rays, sea turtles and occasionally white-tip reef sharks. The formations of black coral and anemones that line the basaltic walls are of particular beauty. The pelagic fauna is equally attractive: common dolphins and, during migration season, larger cetaceans may appear during open-water dives. Water temperature varies between 17 and 23 degrees Celsius throughout the year.
Diving activities around Graciosa are organised by certified diving centres based in Santa Cruz, which offer discovery dives for beginners, guided dives for certified divers and PADI certification courses. The price of a guided dive is generally between 50 and 80 euros, including equipment. Early booking is recommended during peak season. For an even more complete sea experience, combine diving with a dolphin watching trip in the island's surroundings, complementing discovery of marine life both above and below the Atlantic surface.
