Sรฃo Mateus Beach is the most beloved and frequented beach on Graciosa, located next to the picturesque fishing village of Sรฃo Mateus da Calheta, on the west coast of the island. It is characterised by its dark sand of volcanic origin, relatively sheltered waters and a genuinely Azorean atmosphere โ€” a beach where fishing boats, drying nets and local families live in relaxed harmony with visitors who arrive for swimming.

The beach is edged by a small fishing port that lends the site an authentic character hard to find in more commercialised beaches. Waters reach temperatures between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius during summer, and the current is generally mild. The framing of black cliffs and green vegetation creates a chromatic contrast characteristic of Azorean volcanic beaches. The village of Sรฃo Mateus offers some dining options, with restaurants and snack bars where you can taste fresh fish and quality seafood at affordable prices โ€” a meal with a view of fishing boats has a special flavour.

Sรฃo Mateus Beach does not have permanent lifeguard coverage throughout the entire bathing season, so prudence is recommended and prior verification of sea conditions. Access is by car or on foot from the village centre, with parking available nearby. The best time to visit is between July and September. Those who enjoy thermal baths can complement the day with a visit to Carapacho Hot Springs, also on the Graciosa coast, for a very different bathing experience.
