Rocha dos Bordoes Trail
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
The Trail of Rocha dos Bordรตes takes the hiker to one of the most spectacular geological formations on Flores and in the entire Azores archipelago: a set of prism-shaped basalt columns that rise in a fan from the slope, with heights reaching 20 metres, resulting from the slow cooling of volcanic lava that created these hexagonal structures of almost architectural precision. It is one of the most photogenic geological phenomena of the Atlantic islands.
The trail leading to Rocha dos Bordรตes crosses landscapes of pastures and Atlantic heather, with open views over the mountainous interior of Flores. The route is moderate difficulty and suitable for hikers with reasonable fitness. The terrain can be damp and slippery, so trekking shoes are essential. The visit is possible throughout the year, but May to September offers more stable weather conditions.
The geological formation of Rocha dos Bordรตes is a natural complement to a visit to the Lakes of Flores, allowing you to understand the volcanic origin that shaped this Atlantic island over millions of years. Admission to the site is free and access is from the main road of the island.
