Poco do Bacalhau Waterfall
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Poรงo do Bacalhau is the most famous waterfall on Flores and one of the most impressive in the entire Azores archipelago, with a drop of approximately 90 metres that plunges into a turquoise-blue lagoon surrounded by rocky walls covered with intense green vegetation, creating a natural amphitheatre of absolutely singular beauty. It is one of the most photographed scenes in Portuguese Atlantic islands.
Access is via a path from the main road with a walking route of about 15 to 20 minutes to the base of the waterfall. The site is most impressive in the wetter months, between November and March, when the waterfall flow is at its maximum, but the visit is possible throughout the year. In summer, the lagoon allows refreshing dips in one of the most spectacular natural pools in the Azores.
Include this visit in an itinerary that also passes through the Lakes of Flores and Poรงo da Alagoinha, completing a day dedicated to the aquatic wonders of the island of Flores.
