Faial Caldera
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
The Caldera of Faial is one of the most impressive volcanic calderas in the Azores, with about 2 kilometres in diameter and 400 metres in depth, located at the highest point of Faial, at approximately 1,043 metres altitude.
The route along the caldera rim offers stunning views over the interior covered with native vegetation โ a forest of cryptomeria, hydrangeas and ferns that contrasts with the harshness of the basalt. On clear days, it is possible to see Pico and other islands of the central group. Access is via the road that climbs from Horta, ending at a parking area next to the start of the trail.
The complete walk around the caldera is about 8 km and takes between 2 to 3 hours, with moderate elevation gain. It is recommended to visit between May and September to ensure better weather conditions, although fog is frequent even in summer. Bring waterproof clothing, plenty of water and mountain shoes. Entry is free. Those who enjoy longer walks can combine this route with the Trail of 10 Volcanoes.
