Almoxarife Beach
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Almoxarife Beach is the main sand beach of Faial, located a few kilometres north of the city of Horta, distinguished by its dark sand of volcanic origin and by the privileged view over the Mountain of Pico that dominates the horizon.
With about 400 metres in length, the beach is much frequented by local residents during the summer months. The water is clean and relatively calm, making it suitable for bathing and snorkelling near the rocks at the ends of the beach. The atmosphere is relaxed and genuine, far from tourism congestion, which gives it an authentic character appreciated by those who prefer beaches with local soul.
The beach has free parking, a snacking area and access to nearby restaurants. The sand is more frequented during July and August, but the months of June and September offer pleasant temperatures with less crowding. In the late afternoon, with the sun setting over the Faial-Pico channel, the view of the mountain of Pico wrapped in clouds is of singular beauty. It is recommended to check the wind conditions before visiting, as the north exposure can generate occasional sea swell.
