Whale Watching - Faial
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Whale watching from Faial is one of the most exciting experiences in the Azores archipelago, with regular boat trips departing from the Horta marina to the rich ocean depths of the channel between Faial and Pico.
The Azores are considered one of the best destinations in the world for whale watching in the wild, and the Faial-Pico channel is one of the zones with the highest concentration of species. It is possible to observe sperm whales, fin whales, humpback whales and various species of dolphins throughout the year. The outings are coordinated by land spotters โ direct heirs of the ancient whale spotters โ who locate the animals with binoculars before guiding the boats by radio, maximising the chances of sightings.
The trips have variable duration between 2 and 4 hours and generally depart early morning. The sighting rate is very high, exceeding 95% with most certified operators. Early booking is recommended, especially between June and September. Bring warm layered clothing, sunscreen and, if you are prone to seasickness, take preventive medication before boarding. Children are welcome and the experience has profound educational impact. Combining this activity with a visit to the Whalers' Museum in Pico greatly enriches understanding of the historical relationship between Azoreans and whales.
