Horta Marina
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Marina da Horta is one of the most famous marinas in the North Atlantic, a mandatory stopping point for sailboats crossing the ocean between Europe and the Americas, making it one of the most cosmopolitan places on Faial.
The most singular tradition of the marina is the collection of paintings that crews have left on the docks and walls over decades โ an open-air gallery in constant growth, with coats of arms, boat names, dates and messages from thousands of navigators from around the world. It is believed that not leaving a painting brings bad luck on the next crossing, perpetuating this unique ritual. The marina also hosts the legendary Peter Cafรฉ Sport, a historic meeting point for sailors.
A visit to the marina is free and can be made at any time of day. A stroll along the docks is especially pleasant in the late afternoon, when the sailboats arrive and sailors socialise. The marina has all the necessary services for recreational vessels, including fuel, water and wi-fi. Even without a boat, the international atmosphere and living history make this place an unmissable visit on Faial.
