Mata do Canario Trail

The Canรกrio Forest Trail is a circular hiking route that crosses a dense forest of cryptomeria and laurissilva on the Seven Cities plateau, on Sรฃo Miguel, offering privileged views over the Lake of Seven Cities from multiple viewpoints along the route. With about 11 kilometres in length and moderate elevation gain, the trail is accessible to hikers with average fitness level.
The route passes by Canรกrio Forest Viewpoint, Cerrado das Freiras Viewpoint and culminates with views over the caldera that rival those of Vista do Rei Viewpoint. The surrounding forest is habitat for several endemic Azores bird species, making the trail attractive for wildlife observers as well. Average duration is three to four hours, depending on pace and photo stops.
The most common starting point is the parking area next to the Seven Cities viewpoint, and prior reservation of the trail visit is mandatory through the Azores visitor management system, especially between May and October. Hiking shoes with good grip are essential, as the path can be damp and slippery throughout the year. Bring waterproof jacket, water and snacks, as there are no supply points along the route.
