Seven Cities Lagoon
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Lake of Seven Cities is one of the most stunning volcanic lakes in Europe, situated within a caldera more than five kilometres in diameter, in the extreme northwest of Sรฃo Miguel. The ensemble consists of two contiguous lakes โ one with a bluish hue and the other green โ separated by a narrow bridge, creating a unique landscape that appears on every list of must-see Azores destinations.
To make the most of your visit, it is recommended to arrive early in the morning, when morning mist gives a mystical atmosphere to the caldera and crowds have not yet arrived. The most sought-after viewpoint for contemplating the lakes is the Vista do Rei Viewpoint, but there are other equally impressive panoramic points along the caldera rim. Entry to the area is free, although some hiking trails require advance reservation.
The region also offers mountain trails, cycling and canoeing activities on the lake itself. Bring waterproof clothing, as the caldera's microclimate can change rapidly, and proper hiking shoes for the dirt paths. The best time to visit is between June and September, when the probability of clear skies is higher.
