Faja da Caldeira de Santo Cristo
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Fajรฃ da Caldeira de Santo Cristo is the most emblematic trekking destination on Sรฃo Jorge, a coastal platform of volcanic origin accessible only on foot or by boat, famous for its interior lagoon where the only clams of the Azores are cultivated. The descent trail, about 8 km, starting from the Serra do Topo area, crosses landscapes of extreme beauty, with views over the Atlantic and the lush vegetation characteristic of the archipelago.
In the fajรฃ you will find traditional fishermen's houses, an atmosphere of rare quietness and the possibility to taste fresh clams caught locally. It is mandatory to book accommodation or return transport in advance, as capacity is limited. Bring sturdy trekking shoes, sunscreen and plenty of water for the journey. The best time to visit is between May and October, when weather conditions are more favourable.
Combine this visit with the Trail of Serra do Topo - Fajรฃ dos Vimes to fully explore the south slope of Sรฃo Jorge.
