Caldera Circuit Trail
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
The Trail Around the Caldera is the most emblematic hiking route on Graciosa, a circular walk that travels the complete rim of the volcanic caldera in the centre of the island, providing panoramic views over the interior of the geological structure, the ocean and, on clear days, neighbouring islands. With about 5 kilometres in length and rated as easy to moderate difficulty, the trail is accessible to hikers with reasonable fitness, including families with older children.
The route, which takes an average of about two hours to walk at a leisurely pace with photo and contemplation stops, passes several natural viewpoints along the caldera rim. Along the way it is possible to observe endemic Azorean flora, including hydrangeas, ferns and native vegetation species that colonise the interior walls of the caldera. One of the most notable moments of the trail is the point from which the opening of Furna do Enxofre is visible at the bottom of the caldera, revealing the dimensions of the volcanic cave that extends beneath the surface.
The most common starting point is the parking area at the entrance to the caldera, accessible by car from Santa Cruz da Graciosa. Prior booking is not necessary for the trail itself, although a visit to Furna do Enxofre should be booked separately. Bring hiking shoes with good grip, waterproof jacket and sufficient water, as the trail has no supply points. The best time is between April and October, preferably early morning. A genuine trail experience that sums up the geological and landscape essence of Graciosa.
