Furna do Enxofre is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary volcanic wonders of the Azores and, without doubt, the most singular point of interest on Graciosa. It is a lava cave of impressive dimensions, whose most notable feature is the natural vault of about 45 metres high that covers an underground chamber where an acidic sulphurous lake rests โ€” one of only a few formations of this type open to the public worldwide. The smell of sulphur is immediately noticeable at the entrance, imparting a primitive atmosphere evocative of the geological processes that formed the archipelago.

The visit is made by descending an elevator installed on the cave wall, which takes visitors to the lake level, allowing contemplation of the volcanic vault underneath, with its stalactite formations and yellow sulphur marks on the walls. The spectacle is particularly impressive when natural light enters through the top opening and illuminates the lagoon waters. There is a walking route in the interior with walkways and lighting. The visit lasts between 45 minutes to an hour and requires prior booking. The ticket has a reduced cost and includes transport by elevator.

Furna do Enxofre is open Tuesday to Sunday, with variable hours depending on the season; it is wise to confirm in advance with Graciosa Agricultural Development Services. Bring an extra layer of clothing, as the interior is cool throughout the year, with temperatures around 14 degrees Celsius. Combine the visit with the Graciosa Caldera Viewpoint, located right above, for a complete experience of the island's volcanic geology. A truly unmissable visit for all lovers of adventure and geology in the Azores.
