Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Peter Cafรฉ Sport is a historic bar and cafรฉ founded in 1918 in the city of Horta, on Faial, considered for decades the main meeting point for navigators crossing the North Atlantic.
Its reputation transcends borders: generations of sailors had to stop at Peter Cafรฉ Sport to exchange meteorological information, send messages, replenish provisions and celebrate completed crossings. The interior, full of nautical memorabilia and historical photographs, tells the living history of ocean navigation. In addition to the bar, the space houses the Scrimshaw Museum, a rare collection of art carved in whale tooth, a legacy of the whaling era of the Azores.
Admission to the museum is paid at a symbolic price and is integrated into the space's handicraft shop. The cafรฉ serves artisan gin and tonic with famous local gin, becoming a gastronomic and cultural experience at the same time. It is located right next to the Marina da Horta, so the visit naturally combines with a stroll along the docks. Open every day, Peter Cafรฉ Sport is an iconic symbol of the maritime identity of Faial.
