Caldera Trail
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
The Trail of the Caldera is the most emblematic hiking route on Corvo and one of the most memorable in the entire Azores archipelago. With about 6 km in length (linear route, round trip approximately 12 km) and positive elevation gain of 560 metres, this PR1 COV classified trail departs from the centre of Vila do Corvo and climbs to the rim of the volcanic caldera that defines the island. The path crosses verdant pastures dotted with blue hydrangeas, zones of Atlantic heather and small meadows, with progressively wider views over the ocean and the island's only village.
The trail is well marked and accessible to hikers with moderate experience, although the last 2 km present considerable slope. Waterproof hiking shoes are indispensable, as the terrain can be muddy for much of the year. Average duration is 4 to 5 hours total. There are no water supply points or establishments along the route, so it is recommended to bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person. The highlight of the trail is the spectacular Caldera of Corvo, with its two lakes at the bottom of the crater. The most favourable season is May to September, with less rainfall and longer daylight hours.
For birdwatching enthusiasts, the trail is equally productive, especially in the scrub areas near the caldera rim. In October and November, during autumn migration, Corvo regularly receives rare species from North America. Also explore the Trail of the Coast of Corvo for a different perspective of the island.
