Santa Bรกrbara Beach is the largest sand beach on the island of Sรฃo Miguel and one of the most extensive in the entire Azores archipelago, stretching approximately one kilometre along the north coast of the island, next to the town of Ribeira Grande. Its dark sand of volcanic origin, consistent Atlantic swell and framing of green cliffs make it an unmissable destination for surfers and nature lovers.
The waves at Santa Bรกrbara attract surfers from around the world, with conditions varying between beginner and advanced levels depending on the time of year. There are several surf schools on the beach offering lessons and equipment rentals at affordable prices. For those who prefer just to watch, the beach has a promenade with terraces and restaurants where you can enjoy the ocean landscape.
Santa Bรกrbara Beach is equipped with a first aid station, changing rooms and lifeguard cover during the summer months. It is recommended to be aware of the current, as the sea can be rough even on apparently calm days. The ideal time for surfing is autumn and winter, while summer offers calmer conditions for swimming. Public transport access from Ponta Delgada is regular and convenient.
