City Gates

The Doors of the City are the most iconic monument in Ponta Delgada and an identity symbol of Sรฃo Miguel. It is a neoclassical portal of three arches in black basaltic stone, built in 1783, once the main entrance to the walled city and now situated on the seafront of the Azorean capital, next to the marina and public garden.
The contrast between the black volcanic stone and the surrounding white paving creates an unmistakable photographic composition that has become the tourism trademark of Ponta Delgada. The monument is integrated into an animated pedestrian zone, lined with cafรฉs, restaurants and local handicraft shops, being the natural starting point for any visit to the historic centre of the city. Entry and external visit are free and the site is accessible at any time of day.
The best light for photography occurs in the late afternoon, when the setting sun illuminates the facade of the Doors of the City with golden tones. Nearby you will find the Alcides Restaurant, ideal for a meal after visiting the historic centre. Throughout the year, the square around the monument hosts markets, festivals and cultural events that enliven the life of the city and offer an authentic experience of Azorean culture.
