Pico da Esperanca
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Peak of Hope is the highest point of Sรฃo Jorge, reaching 1,053 metres altitude and offering, on clear days, an extraordinary panorama over five islands of the central group of the Azores archipelago: Sรฃo Jorge, Pico, Faial, Graciosa and Terceira. It is one of the most impressive natural viewpoints of the entire archipelago, in an altitude environment marked by altitude vegetation and the frequent presence of fog that imparts a mystical atmosphere to the place.
Access to the summit is via a road that climbs to the mountain zone, from which there is a marked pedestrian route to the highest point. It is recommended to depart early in the morning to increase the probability of clear skies, as clouds tend to accumulate on the mountain throughout the day. Bring warm and waterproof clothing regardless of the season, as temperatures at the summit can be significantly lower than on the coast.
The visit combines very well with the descent via the Trail of Serra do Topo to Fajรฃ dos Vimes, creating a complete day of immersion in the wild nature of Sรฃo Jorge.
