Formosa Beach
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Praia Formosa is, without doubt, the most emblematic beach on Santa Maria and one of the most extensive sandy arenals in the entire Azores archipelago. With about 700 metres in length, it is a rarity in this volcanic region where pebble beaches predominate. Its south-facing orientation guarantees it the greatest number of sunshine hours of the Azores islands, making it an ideal destination from June to September, when water temperatures reach 24-25ยฐC. Access is easy, with free parking and beach facilities equipped with a bar and sanitary facilities.
The atmosphere is family-friendly and relaxed, with moderate swell making it suitable for bathing and bodyboarding. The transparent and clean waters earn it an annual Blue Flag classification. In the vicinity you will find small restaurants and cafรฉs where you can enjoy fresh grilled fish. For a more complete experience, combine the visit with exploration of the famous Red Desert located just a few kilometres north. Praia Formosa is also the heart of the festivities of Marรฉ de Agosto, the largest open-air music festival in the Azores, which takes place every year in August and attracts thousands of visitors to the island.
Visit tip: arrive early in the morning to guarantee a spot during peak hours in July and August. The sunset seen from here, with orange tones reflected in the golden sand, is absolutely unmissable. Also consult the other beaches in the Azores to plan the best beach itinerary in the archipelago.
