The Natural Pools of Cais do Mourato are a set of tidal pools embedded in the lava rock of the south coast of the island of Pico, formed by the millennia-old action of the ocean on volcanic basalt, constituting one of the most pleasant and hidden bathing places on the island.

Unlike conventional beaches, the natural pools of the Azores are formed by depressions in the lava platform that retain sea water and warm in the sun throughout the day. At Cais do Mourato, this process creates a sequence of pools of varying dimensions, with direct access to the open sea through natural openings in the rock, allowing bathing in clear water protected from maritime swell. The setting is austere and beautiful: black lava, blue-green water and the boundless ocean as a backdrop.

Access is via secondary road from the nearest village, with a small parking area at the site. The pools have no significant support facilities โ€” no showers, no bars โ€” so it is wise to bring water, snacks and sunscreen. The best time to visit is between June and September, preferably in the morning when the water is still fresh and movement is minimal. Take precautions on days of rough seas, as waves can quickly fill the pools. Entry is free. Those who enjoy snorkelling will find a remarkable diversity of marine fauna here.
