Ten Volcanoes Trail
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
The Trail of 10 Volcanoes is one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes on Faial, travelling about 18 kilometres through the central caldera and ten volcanic cones that dot the interior landscape of the island.
The route, classified as difficult, provides a privileged view of Azorean geodiversity: fields of lava covered with endemic vegetation, hidden lakes, views over the ocean and the silhouette of Pico in the background complete an experience of total immersion in volcanic nature. The trail also crosses the rim of the Caldera of Faial, one of the most impressive geological structures of the archipelago.
The estimated duration is 6 to 8 hours, so it is essential to start early, preferably at dawn. Bring food, abundant water (at least 2 litres), waterproof clothing and trekking shoes with good grip. The route is linear, not circular, so it is convenient to arrange transport for the arrival point. Completion is recommended between June and September, avoiding days of dense fog. Specialised local guides are available in Horta and are advised for those without mountain experience.
