Capelinhos Volcano

The Volcano of Capelinhos is the most striking geological symbol of Faial, the result of a submarine eruption that took place between 1957 and 1958 and added about 2.4 kmยฒ of new land to the island.

The landscape that extends around the Capelinhos lighthouse is truly lunar: layers of solidified ash, black lava flows and the imposing volcanic chimney create a scenario that seems to belong to another planet. It is one of the mandatory stops of any visit to the Azores archipelago, often associated with the nearby Interpretation Centre of the Volcano of Capelinhos, located right next door.

To make the most of the visit, it is recommended to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the slanting light highlights the contours of the landscape. Access to the volcanic cone is on foot via unpaved trails, so sturdy footwear is essential. Entry to the exterior zone is free; the underground museum has its own ticket. Avoid days of strong wind, as the ash can be uncomfortable.
