The Interpretation Centre of the Volcano of Capelinhos is an underground museum inaugurated in 2008 on the western tip of Faial, built partially beneath the surface of volcanic ash to narrate the history of the 1957-1958 eruption and Azorean volcanism in an immersive and scientifically rigorous manner.

The exhibition route begins with the human history of the eruption โ€” its impact on the local population, the forced emigration of hundreds of families to the United States and the transformation of the landscape โ€” and advances to the explanation of geological processes that shaped the Azores over millions of years. Models, audiovisuals, rock samples and interactive panels make the visit accessible to all ages. The building itself is a work of architecture that dialogues with the Volcano of Capelinhos visible from its panoramic windows.

The centre has a ticket office with differentiated prices for adults and children; the visit takes an average of 90 minutes. It is open Tuesday to Sunday throughout the year, with extended hours in peak season. It is recommended to visit the museum before exploring the exterior landscape, as the historical and geological context significantly enriches the experience in the volcano zone. The shop has specialised publications on Azorean geology.
