The Historic Centre of Angra do Heroรญsmo is one of the most remarkable sets of urban origin Portuguese in the Atlantic, classified as UNESCO World Heritage since 1983, making it the only historic centre in the Azores with this distinction. Located on the south coast of the island of Terceira, Angra was for centuries a strategic port on the routes between Europe, the Americas and India.

The cobbled streets, baroque churches, convents and manor houses tell centuries of Portuguese maritime and colonial history. Highlight for the Cathedral, the Church of Mercy, the Angra Theatre and the gardens of the Duke of Terceira, which give the city a timeless elegance. The Fort of Sรฃo Joรฃo Baptista, visible from the city, completes the historical and defensive setting of the bay.

The best time to visit is during spring or autumn, when tourist flow is lower and the climate is pleasant for walking. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes for walks on the stone streets and to reserve at least half a day to explore the main monuments. Admission to most public spaces is free, although some museums charge a token fee.
