Caldeira Velha
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Caldeira Velha is an area of geodiversity and thermal interest located on the south slope of the รgua de Pau Mountain Range, in the interior of Sรฃo Miguel, between the cities of Ribeira Grande and Ponta Delgada. The site stands out for a waterfall of hot water that falls over a natural stone pool, surrounded by exuberant subtropical vegetation of giant ferns, mosses and hydrangeas, creating a scene of primal beauty that combines the geothermal power of the island with the richness of its flora.
The natural thermal pools, with temperatures varying between 28 and 35 degrees Celsius, allow for a relaxing bath in a completely wild setting, very different from the more commercial facilities of Furnas. Access to the site is via a short 15-minute hike from the parking area, through a well-marked trail that crosses dense forest. The entrance ticket has a reduced cost and includes access to the pools and the interpretive pathway.
Caldeira Velha is a natural complement to a visit to Lake of Fire, located in the same mountainous area, and the two experiences can be combined in a single day of exploring the interior of the island. It is recommended to visit on a weekday to avoid the largest crowds and bring swimwear and a towel. The dry season, between June and September, is ideal for making the most of outdoor bathing.
