Fire Lagoon Trail
Updated: 16 Mar 2026
Lake of Fire is a lake of volcanic origin located in the centre of Sรฃo Miguel, at an altitude of about 590 metres, within the รgua de Pau Mountain Range Natural Reserve. Considered one of the purest and best preserved lakes in the Azores, its crystal-clear water and white sand beach shoreline create a landscape of rare wild beauty.
The main access is via the Canรกrio Forest Trail or by paths from the EN3 road, with routes varying between 45 minutes and two hours of hiking, depending on the starting point. The trail is moderate difficulty and crosses dense laurissilva vegetation, with the opportunity to spot endemic Azores birds. Entry to the reserve is free, but advance online reservation is mandatory during peak season.
Bring plenty of water, sunscreen and layered clothing, as the temperature at the summit can be significantly lower than on the coast. The best period to visit is between July and September, when weather conditions are more stable. Swimming is prohibited in the lake to preserve the unique ecosystem of this natural reserve.
