The Hot Springs of Furnas are a set of natural hydrothermal springs located on the shore of Lake Furnas, within the volcanic caldera of the village of Furnas, about 30 kilometres east of Ponta Delgada, on Sรฃo Miguel. With temperatures that can exceed 40 degrees Celsius, the ferruginous and sulphurous waters are sought both for their therapeutic properties and for the spectacle of natural fumaroles and bubbling springs.

One of the most unique gastronomic experiences in the Azores can be experienced here: the famous Furnas Stew, a slow-cooked meat and vegetable dish that is cooked for hours using the heat of volcanic springs. Several local restaurants serve this traditional dish, and it is advisable to book in advance, especially on weekends. The price ranges from 15 to 20 euros per person.

The public and private thermal pools in the area allow for a revitalising dip in a truly unique setting. The Terra Nostra Garden Hotel offers access to its famous thermal pool. It is recommended to visit the fumaroles at sunrise to catch the light and morning steam. Bring clothes you don't mind staining, as thermal water can leave reddish marks on fabrics.
