Sao Lourenco Bay

São Lourenço Bay is considered by many the most stunning viewpoint on Santa Maria, offering an exceptional panorama over one of the most beautiful bays in the Azores. Located on the north coast of the island, this cove of turquoise waters contrasts dramatically with the supports of red and yellow clay that surround it — a unique geological landscape resulting from more than 8 million years of history of this, the oldest of the Azores islands. The viewpoint is accessible via a paved road, with a parking area and interpretive panels about local geology and biodiversity.

The bay is equally a starting point for snorkelling and diving, thanks to its calm waters and the richness of marine life in the coastal reefs. The village of São Lourenço, with its whitewashed houses and historic threshing floors, deserves a leisurely visit to feel the pulse of rural São Maria life. The trails that depart from here allow exploration of the slope and reach other viewpoints over the north coast. The best time to visit is between May and October, with July and August guaranteeing the most stable conditions.
