Climbing Pico Mountain is the most challenging and emblematic adventure in the Azores, taking hikers to the highest point in continental and insular Portugal, with 2,351 metres altitude, in the heart of the island of Pico.

The official route departs from the Mountain House, at about 1,200 metres altitude, and climbs the north flank of the volcano for approximately 4 to 5 hours up and 3 to 4 hours down. The terrain is extremely demanding: irregular basaltic lava, without clearly marked trail, with frequent use of wooden posts for orientation. Near the summit, the "Piquinho" โ€” a secondary cone about 70 metres deep โ€” can be climbed for an additional experience of geological immersion.

Climbing requires mandatory prior authorisation obtained at the Mountain House, where forest rangers verify equipment and weather conditions before authorising departure. Use of trekking poles, climbing helmet and waterproof clothing is mandatory. Sports shoes are explicitly prohibited: high-cut mountain boots are indispensable. Visibility varies drastically and clouds can appear within minutes. It is recommended to depart before 7am. The summit view, when weather permits, encompasses several islands of the archipelago and is one of the most memorable of all Macaronesia.
